This tiny peninsula is the last pristine stretch on the East Coast. Where the bay meets the sea, watermen till the tides and family farms stretch lush and green. The island's small towns are as Southern as sweet potato pie. Wild Chincoteague ponies run free by the sea. And the string of natural barrier islands look the same as when Native Americans first dined on oysters on these very shores. The serene fishing village, seven miles long and one and one-half miles wide and abounding with history and natural charm, welcomes all to explore its unique island heritage.
Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge includes more than 14,000 acres of beach, dunes, marsh, and maritime forest. Most of the refuge is located on the Virginia end of Assateague Island. Chincoteague Refuge provides habitat for waterfowl, wading birds, shorebirds, and song birds, as well as other species of wildlife and plants. Refuge staff manage this barrier island habitat to allow many species of wildlife to co-exist, each establishing their own place in the environment. Refuge management programs restore threatened and endangered species and conserve local wildlife and plants. The refuge also provides environmental education and wildlife-dependent recreational opportunities such as fishing, hunting, wildlife observation, interpretation, and wildlife photography.
The popularity of the area is due, in part, to the annual Chincoteague Pony Penning. The modern version of the eighteenth-century harnessing ritual, in which ponies swim across the channel to be auctioned off, began in 1925. It was immortalized in Marguerite Henry’s 1947 children’s book, "Misty of Chincoteague," a tale about an actual island pony. In 1960, the movie version was filmed in Chincoteague.
Each year on the last Wednesday in July, foals and yearlings from the fire company’s herd, escorted by Chincoteague cowboys, swim the channel from Assateague to Chincoteague. On Thursday they are auctioned off, and those that are not sold will eventually swim back to Assateague. Because the ponies graze on the salty marsh grasses--saltmarsh cordgrass and American beachgrass in particular--they drink much more than other horses and usually appear to be bloated or fat.
There are several local legends about the origins of the ponies on Assateague. The most popular (as found in Misty of Chincoteague) is that the ponies swam ashore from a Spanish ship that had run aground, while another story has it that they came from a wrecked ship that had been on its way to the English colonies. A third claims that pirates brought the ponies to the island. Some historians assert that the ponies are simply descendants of livestock turned loose by early settlers. In any event, the ponies have been on Assateague for about 300 years.
Today, Chincoteague is a quiet, relaxing vacation destination for families. Tourism increased after the completion of the bridge to Assateague in 1962 and is now Chincoteague's primary industry.
